Opening and Closing a Door

Modeling Grace and Courtesy while opening and closing the door helps to keep the classroom environment peaceful and free of distractions while others are working. This is also a great opportunity to present a greeting and courtesy exercise.

Materials

  • Door
  • A red (for right) or a green (for left) hand cut out and mounted on the door above and to the side of handle.

Points of Interest

  • Placing one hand on the knob and the other one on the hand print.
  • Seeing the latch go in and out.
  • Hearing the click as the latch is closed.  (Bringing your ear to the door, while presenting the exercise calls the child’s attention to the click.)

  • Hand caught in door.
  • Door slamming.
  • Door opening after having been shut.
  • Latch not fastened securely.
  • Opening the door into anyone.
