Often in a Montessori classroom there are a lot of activities going on simultaneously. Younger students are often quite curious about the more advanced materials, especially if an older friend is watching a demonstration by a Montessori guide. May I is a Grace and Courtesy exercise used when a child would like to watch a demonstration or work in progress.
The child learns concepts in circumference by matching the lids to jars, lessons in open/close with zippers, buttons, and velcro. Concentration develops as the child sorts various items that have different functions for their use. This lesson prepares children for dressing frames, opening lunch containers with independence, and getting dressed. i.e. putting on a coat, and zipping without help from adult.
During the first week in a Montessori classroom, students are shown a number of demonstrations to set the stage for conduct by both students and teachers. Modeling polite behavior like "excuse me, may I please pass by" when moving through the classroom is an interactive way for students to learn a peaceful approach to an every day action they perform.
