Phonetic Flash Cards

Phonetic Flash Cards are another exercise designed to familiarize students with the concept of naming and linked sounds to create words. This activity is a series of 5×7 flashcards on a tray with pictures on one side and the names on the other. Vowels are colored blue and consonants are in red. As students become more familiar with exercises such as this, the Montessori Guide will introduce more group exercises like the memory game and students can work together to write the name pictured on the card.

Materials

• Cards of various sizes, 5” by 7 ½”, 5” by 8”, and 5” by 12”, in various colors.
• Words are written on the cards with the consonants in red and the vowels are in blue.
• Trays.

Points of Interest

• The colors of the vowels and the consonants on the cards.
• Different colored cards.
• Naming the words quickly and remembering them.
• Grouping the cards by vowel sounds.

Control of Error

• Teacher or another child.
• Child’s own knowledge.

Direct Aims

• To increase speed of word recognition.
• To provide further practice in three, four, and five letter words and two syllable words.
