Learning to properly blow one’s nose is a critical tool in the health and safety of the classroom. A hanging mirror can be used to observe the activity.

Materials

  • Box of tissues
  • Mirror – The child should watch the exercise in the mirror.

Points of Interest

  • Using three finger grip to fold tissue.
  • Smoothing the tissue.
  • Making sure the fingers touch the side of the nose so the tissue is correctly positioned.
  • Being able to breathe more freely after process.

Control of Error

  • Seeing or feeling mucous on person or clothing.
  • Tearing tissue.
  • Not feeling breathing improvement.

Direct Aims

  • To foster independence.
  • To teach how to blow nose.

Indirect Aims

  • To establish awareness of the sequential nature of activity.

Aditional Exercises

  • Using different sizes, shapes and colors of tissues and tissue boxes.
  • Using a handkerchief.

Extensions

  • Keeping tissues folded in pocket.
