Apple coring is a practical life exercise that aims to teach students about the food they eat, as well as how to prepare a snack. During the month of October, it's usually a good time to introduce a unit on Johnny Appleseed, which means it's a great time to taste and try some of the early apple harvest varietals. Exercises like these are a great way to engage students with food exercises, while teaching them concentration and fine motor skills.
Audio Dictative Word Building is a language exercise which hones a student's ability to discriminate individual letter sounds. A Montessori guide can bring together a group or individual student as a means of assessing or reinforcing the knowledge present, even assisting students who may be struggling to retain specific certain letter sounds. Using the moveable alphabet, students are asked to spell out simple 2 and 3 letter words on a rug.
Children are shown how to use basters to transfer liquid similar to pouring exercises. These activities develop three finger grip which can later be used for writing, while providing a fun way for students to work with water. Extensions of this activity include the One Drop Work, and working with liquid measuring.
The Binomial Cube is an advanced work in the Sensorial area of the Montessori classroom. As a pre-algebra exercise, this very unassuming puzzle helps to develop advanced mathematical abstractions by creating a tactile experience for the equation (a+b)^3. This material establishes the concept of three dimensional construction, and is the base for further materials in this area of study.
Learning to properly blow one’s nose is a Grace and Courtesy demonstration and a critical tool in the health and safety of the classroom.
sentence and story-based understanding of language. This is a big step on the road to reading and most students in pre-k/kindergarten programs work here through the end of the traditional 10 month school year.
The Brown Broad Stair is a set of 10 rectangular prisms which visually increase in size from 1X1X20cm to 10x10x20cm. It’s primary purpose is to increase the visual perception of size, building on the concepts introduced by the Pink Tower, yet they are often used together to compare, contrast, and build intricate patterns while further exploring the concept of size.
In most classrooms, the library is a place of quiet and solitude. Books become the tools of early reading and language development and it is important to model their care early so that they can last as long as possible. This exercise is designed to help students understand the importance of gentle movements and honor the special place books occupy in the classroom.
Caring for plants around the classroom is a great way for students to increase their awareness of the classroom environment, as well as understand the growth cycle of plant species. In our classroom we compare leaf forms, talk about how they improve air quality, and after students are shown this exercise, they will ask daily to participate in their care. This one is great for those squirmy wormy days where the outside environment might not be as fun as all the activities student's can perform inside.
During the first week in a Montessori classroom, students are shown a number of demonstrations to set the stage for conduct by both students and teachers. Demonstrations of cleanliness and caring for one's own body are vital to ensure that students can learn and model this behavior for others.
